Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol"
On December 10, the kids from class 7a and I went to Weimar to see a theatre adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. We had carefully worked through a simplified version beforehand and arrived full of excitement for an English play—only to be presented with a German one (Well, I had not read the small print with scholarly precision. Shame on me). The students mostly seemed to have enjoyed it, especially since they had been given time to stroll around the Christmas market beforehand. To restore a minimum of linguistic dignity, at least the songs performed by the actors were in English. So this is what the students said:
“I liked it, because it was funny. The three Christmas ghosts were a little bit boring. Scrooge is a cool character.“
“I like the background and the stage props. I recommend it only to younger kids because it was a bit childish. The younger children infront of us stood up all the time.“
“I enjoyed the Christmas Carol and the setting was amzing. The story line was cool and fun.“
“In the beginning I was laughing about the way one man was walking to the left and then to the right. The ghosts were very loud, but it was fun to watch.“
“I‘ve really enjoyed the show because the actors could express the emotions of their characters very well.“
“It was pretty cool. I liked the special effects but I think it was a bit too long.
“My favourite part was when Marley came, also because oft he special effects. That was exiting. But the rest was quite boring, because it was in German.“
“I loved it. It looked so realistic and so beautiful. I would visit it again if I could. While they played, I didn`t realise that there were just 7 people on stage.“
